Top 10 Gardening Tips for July
- Fertilize Regularly – Summer annuals and veggies grow fast and need consistent nutrients. Try Bumper Crop Fertilizers with added mycorrhizae for that extra oomph.
- Water Tomatoes in the Morning – To prevent cracking, maintain even moisture and enrich your soil with organic matter.
- Check Your Drip System – Inspect each emitter and water deeply once or twice a week. Add an emitter to trees every other year to encourage root spread.
- Feed Houseplants – Apply Maxsea fertilizer and switch orchid food to a high-phosphate blend. Move them to the east side of your house and flush with water to avoid salt buildup.
- Pond Care – Replace Barley Bales, test water quality, and fertilize water lilies to keep your pond looking pristine.
- Prune Apple Trees Now – Healing is fastest in summer. Protect soft fruits with bird netting or Scare Tape.
- Watch for Pear Slug – Check cherry and pear trees for green slugs with black heads. Treat with insecticide early in the month and again on the 25th.
- Fight Fungus – Lawns, roses, and many ornamentals are vulnerable. Spray weekly and rotate fungicides.
- Bug Control – Spray Sevin on elms for leaf beetles and try Sluggo Plus for earwigs.
- Plant Shade Trees – Now’s the time! Enjoy instant relief from heat and beauty come fall.
