1. Water Everything

Make sure to water every part of your yard at least once or twice this month. Even if April showers grace your garden, your plants—now bursting with fresh leaves—will appreciate the extra hydration. For optimal results, water between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m. to help prevent fungal diseases on your lawn and plants.

2. Aerate Your Lawn and Topdress

Now is the ideal time to aerate your lawn. After aeration, apply a topdressing such as Boost or Paydirt. If you have clay soils, a little Gypsum goes a long way. Products like Master Green Lawn Fertilizer or EB Organics Natural Green Lawn Food deliver spectacular results, giving your lawn the boost it deserves.

3. Mulch to Retain Moisture

Keep your garden beds in top shape by mulching around all your plants with Bumper Crop Soil Conditioner or Protect. A 3-inch layer can reduce water loss by up to 20%! Just be sure to water during the early hours and avoid late-day watering to keep fungus at bay.

4. Fertilize, Fertilize, Fertilize!

Whether it’s your lawn, vegetables, trees, or shrubs, a good dose of fertilizer is key to spring success. Our Greenhouse Garden Center carries an array of both organic and synthetic options to fit your garden’s unique needs. A soil test can help you pinpoint the best nutrients to add, especially since nitrogen is often the main factor in our region.

5. Guard Your Fruit Trees

When the flower buds on your apple and pear trees turn red, it’s time to set up Codling Moth Traps as an early warning system. Once your apple trees have dropped about 80% of their blossoms, treat them with products like Take Down, Eight, or Dr. Earth Final Stop. This proactive approach helps keep those pesky worms away from your precious fruit.

6. Get Those Season Starters Up

For tomato and pepper enthusiasts, plant your Season Starters one week after the soil temperature has warmed up inside the starter walls. These early birds will be the biggest and brightest in your neighborhood, giving you a delightful head start on the growing season.

7. Keep Unwanted Fruit at Bay

If you have plum, crabapple, or pear trees that tend to drop fruit all over your patio or driveway, spray them with Florel while they’re in bloom. For best results, apply the spray once a week for three consecutive weeks to prevent messy, unwanted fruit.

8. Insect Control for Trees and Shrubs

Now is the time to apply Bonide Tree and Shrub Insect Control to protect your trees and shrubs from unwanted pests. With imidacloprid as its active ingredient, this annual soil drench is excellent at preventing borers. To help protect pollinators, wait until about 80% of the blossoms have dropped on your flowering trees before application.

9. Prune for a Fuller, Healthier Look

Prune your junipers and arborvitae now to encourage new growth that will fill in any gaps during the summer. When pruning roses, make sure to seal any cuts wider than a pencil with a pruning sealer to prevent cane borers. A product like 3 in 1 Flower Care can also help keep aphids and cane borers at bay.

10. Maintain Your Pond

For those with ponds, use Pond Shade when the average water temperature reaches 50°F. This helps prevent the growth of green water algae and blanket weed. And don’t forget to feed your fish 2-4 times a week once they become active.
