Doreen Spires was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She didn’t have a garden, but was exposed to planting seeds in wooden cheese boxes at a very early age when the Brooklyn Botanic Garden sold seeds to the elementary school children for 2 cents a packet. Her interest in gardening and preserving began over 50 years ago when she was a student at the University of Illinois. Since then she has always had a garden where she lived in California, Kansas and currently in Reno. She preserves her harvest by canning, freezing, dehydrating, pickling, and her husband is a home brewer making beer from the hops they grow. In 2018 she became a Master Gardener and in 2021 a Master Food Preserver.
